Progressive rowing programs for ages 12+, from first strokes to competitive racing. Build confidence, skill, and independence while connecting with Hingham Harbor and a great rowing community.
Director of Rowing: Sarah Dewey
Our rowing programs are led by an experienced coaching team, under the direction of Sarah Dewey. Former U.S. National Team gold medalist and Division I coach, Sarah brings world-class experience and a supportive, athlete-first approach to HMC. During the school year, she serves as Head Coach of the Hingham High School Boys Crew.
Program Requirements (Please Review Before Registering)
Swimming: All rowers must be confident swimmers, including swimming underwater, and are required to watch the USRowing Safety Video prior to participation.
Physical Readiness: For safety, rowers must be able to turn their head while rowing and perform a deep squat to dock or water level and stand back up unassisted.
Height Recommendation: A minimum height of 5 feet is recommended to safely handle rowing equipment.
Every session is led by experienced instructors and supported by safety launches.

Youth Rowing
Learn the fundamentals in a single and progress to the quad to row with others as a crew.
Grades 7-12. All levels of rowing experience welcome, beginners to advanced. Confident swimmers only.

Find your level and get on the water:
Beginner
Who: Grades 7–12 (6th grade by assessment). No experience needed.
Prerequisite: Competent swimmer.
A fun, supportive introduction to rowing for first-time athletes. Rowers learn boat and oar handling, water safety, basic commands, and teamwork—ending with a spirited Pirate Race on the final Friday.
Intermediate
Who: Grades 7–12 with prior rowing experience.
Prerequisite: Competent swimmer. Beginner program or school-year rowing recommended.
For rowers ready to build on the basics. Athletes refine technique, improve balance and boat control, and row with greater independence—progressing to quads and fours. Each session ends with a Pirate Race on the final Friday
Advanced
Who: Grades 7–12 with significant rowing experience.
Prerequisite: Competent swimmer. Prior school-year or competitive rowing experience required.
Designed for experienced rowers ready to push performance. Athletes build speed, technical precision, and on-the-water independence, with an emphasis on strong execution and race readiness.

Advanced 1
Who: High school rowers with prior rowing experience.
Prerequisite: Competent swimmer. School-year or competitive rowing experience required.
Designed for experienced high school athletes ready to sharpen performance. Rowers refine bladework, build speed and racing fitness, and gain confidence across multiple boat classes, including 1x, 4x, 4+, and 8+. Sessions emphasize technical precision, intensity, and smart racing—wrapping up with 250m Beach Sprints or Pirate Racing on the final Friday.
Inclement weather days: Erg & Circuit Training (erg intervals, strength, core, mobility).
Advanced 2
Who: High school rowers with extensive rowing experience.
Prerequisite: Competent swimmer. Competitive school-year or club rowing experience required.
Designed for highly experienced athletes focused on fine-tuning and speed. Rowers train with greater intensity, emphasizing precision, speedwork, and racing fitness across 1x, 4x, and 8+ boats. Sessions culminate with 250m Beach Sprints or Pirate Racing on the final Friday.
Inclement weather days: Erg & Circuit Training (erg intervals, strength, core, mobility).
Please Note: Coach approval is required for participation. Once your booking has been accepted, you will receive an invoice and must remit payment within 1 week to ensure your seat. If your payment is not received, your seat may be made available to other rowers.

Maintain fitness, refine skills, or supplement other training.
Experienced high school and college rowers.
Who: Experienced high school and college rowers.
Prerequisite: Competent swimmer. Prior school-year or competitive rowing experience required.
A flexible, athlete-driven rowing option. Rowers set their own workouts, form lineups with friends, and row independently in 1x, 4x, and 8+ boats. Ideal for experienced athletes looking to maintain fitness, refine skills, or supplement other training.

Logbook Singles
Independent sculling access.
Advanced 2 rowers, with approval.
Who: High School and College Advanced 2 rowers, with approval.
Prerequisite: HMC Captain’s Test completed. Competent swimmer required.
An independent rowing option for highly experienced scullers. Approved athletes may take out a single scull on their own during staffed boathouse hours, logging sessions independently and rowing at their own pace. Access is subject to boat availability and daily conditions.
Designed for confident rowers seeking maximum flexibility, autonomy, and additional water time.
